Beyond the Green: Gender and Tech in the Energy Transition
As COP31 approaches, the call for a just and inclusive climate transition is more urgent than ever. Last year’s decision affirmed that "climate action must be rights-based, inclusive and equitable, tailored to national circumstances, and - above all - people-centred." But what does this commitment mean in practice, and whose rights and experiences are being considered?
In our new Fact Sheet, we explore this question from a feminist perspective, examining how renewable energy initiatives, when implemented without inclusive, rights-based governance, can perpetuate existing inequalities and contribute to gender-based violence, including through the use of technology. We also highlight women- and community-led solutions that challenge these harms and offer pathways towards a truly just energy transition - one that places gender equality, human rights and community needs at its heart.
